(Eight months after the battle with Aizen)
"There she is, that filthy Ryoka."
"Too good to go to Rukongai like the rest of us."
"What a stupid sounding name."
"Daddy must be filthy filthy rich for her to be allowed to live on the Academy grounds."

"Katrina-chan?"
"Huh? Oh, Captain Ukitake!"
"Lost in thought again?" he asked, smiling at his newly appointed Fifth Seat, Katrina Lau. He had stepped outside his office and saw her nearby, leaning up against the railing of the barracks and looking up at the darkening sky.
"Yeah. The curse of my kind," she sighed.
"You're not an Immortal anymore."
"Tell that to my brain, Sir!" she stopped abruptly, eyes widened in dismay ".... I...I'm sorry for that outburst. I should not have said that."
"No, no, please, Katrina-chan. As I keep telling you, a burden shared is better endured."
Katrina absentmindedly touched the black cloth collar wrapped around her neck. While it was worn for a decorative purpose, she had always felt that her neck was cold despite the constantly warm weather of the Soul Society.
"I know you've only been here a few days. Just know that I and Rukia-chan are always available to talk," Ukitake said, referring to Assistant Captain Rukia Kuchiki, who was recently promoted in ranks within the 13th Company
"Captain....I was thinking back on my time at the Academy. Why wasn't I sent to the Rukongai first like everyone else? And why was I housed on the Academy grounds? And....come to think of it, I don't think I even left the grounds until graduation."
Ukitake thought for a moment before answering. "It's a complicated situation. As you know, when you first arrived to Soul Society our situation with Aizen was escalating. We did our best to isolate the students from any danger, in the event that the current companies fell."
"That would explain why I never had a captain guest lecture at any of my classes. But it still doesn't explain why I was the only one housed on the Academy grounds. Everyone else when back to their homes in the Rukongai."
"Well..."
Katrina could sense that her Captain was reluctant to answer. "Captain Ukitake, please. How I got here is still hazy at best. I know what my past life was in the Earth Realm. I know I lost at the hands of that foul Emperor Shao Kahn. I just want to know how it went from Earth Realm to Soul Society when both realms aren't part of the same reality."
Ukitake shook his head. "I only know what the Captain Commander told me. But what I'll do is this, Katrina. I will request an audience with the Captain Commander and let him know that you are having issues reconciling with your past life and your life here as a member of the 13 Court Guard Companies. If he is willing, he may answer your questions directly."
"Wait! No! Please, that's not necessary. I don't want to trouble him with my insignificant issues. Not after such a battle with Aizen."
Ukitake put his hand on her shoulder. "Let him decide. He is the one who made the arrangements with the Elder Gods of your Earth Realm."
"I... see," Katrina replied, turning away from her Captain.
"Get some rest," Ukitake said. "I"ll ask Rukia-chan to train with you tomorrow while I go visit the Captain Commander."
Katrina nodded. "Thank you Captain. Goodnight then." With that she bowed and went to her barracks.
Ukitake sighed. She still couldn't look at him directly and he knew why. She had a strong relationship with the Earth Realm's Windgod, Fujin. The only common characteristic between himself and the Windgod was long white hair. Still, Katrina suffered tremendous psychological damage along with her death during the tournament. Such as it was, he wondered why the Captain Commander assigned her to his company.
"You look troubled, Jushiro"
"Shunsui! What brings you over tonight?"
"Nanao-chan and Lisa-chan are reading tonight. Can't get any rest with those two and their book discussions. But like I said, you looked rather troubled just now."
"It's my Fifth Seat."
"Oh?"
"You were there when Captain Commander Yamamoto issued his orders."
"Old man Yamamoto would never had agreed to something like this if it were not for Ichigo Kurosaki."
"True. Speaking of Kurosaki-Kun, I wonder how far along Urahara is with that project."
"Your guess is as good as mine. You were telling me about Katrina-chan?"
"If what she says is true, then it will most likely take her twice as long, if not longer, than Rukia-chan took to move on from the past."
"Hmm... That's going to be tough. Oh, by the way: Kiyone-chan and Sentaro-kun... How are they adjusting to Rukia-chan's promotion and Katrina-chan's assignment to your company?"
"They're happy for Rukia-chan. They're not sure about Katrina-chan yet, what with how the past few new people went."
"Ah yes, Amagai and Kibune," Kyoraku sighed, adjusting his straw hat, referring to the briefly appointed 3rd Company Captain and his chosen Third Seat. "Such a shame. Amagai had potential."
"I'm glad that Kensei, Shinji and Rose agreed to take up their old Captain's titles."
"Yeah."

This is the first part of my Damaged series. My OC, Katrina is a Mortal Kombat character I've been writing with since about 1999. I am presenting her as a stripped down version going into Soul Society.
This marks a change in how I usually write. I usually write with way too much detail as need be. Hence this seems to be more dialogue than anything. It's the start of the series, it's gonna be
My target audience needs to be up to date with the Manga (via scanlation sites). I've tried to be a little more descriptive with the Mortal Kombat and Highlander references, but if you're still confused, please check wikipedia or ask me
Also, as a side note, the title Damaged and all the chapter titles are all Queensryche song titles.
Edit to add: I've started putting down a theme song for each chapter. You can check out Spotify, Last.fm or you tube if you're not familiar with the song
